Life & Health
CW for Health IssuesSo I and my family caught covid for the first time this Christmas. We've managed to avoid it until now by being extra cautious. The symptoms are mild to moderate, but I'm worried about how this'll interact with Mom's and my MCAS in the long run. Worse, my grandparents caught it from us over the holidays, and they're not in the best of health even without this virus on top. It's made for a pretty subdued Christmas overall. At least we had the positive rapid test before we went to visit my newborn niece over the holidays? Though my aunt made questionable decisions in that regard just because she was symptom-free (Without testing. Ugh. I love my family but sometimes you just gotta disagree with their choices.)

My parents, my brother and I have taken turns taking care of each other, so it's not the worst way to spend Christmas. But I don't like being sick, I've caught enough flus and viruses in 2023. Here's hoping 2024 will be better.

Exchanges
Due to above mentioned health issues, I haven't made it far through the Yuletide collection, and I doubt I'll have time to make a rec post before the new year. There's a couple tabs I've got open with interesting looking fics, though, like the Time Engraver one or the Detective L one!

My gift was pretty awesome, someone took me up on the Jet Rocks Lives Instead Of Ruby AU prompt for Dimension 20: A Crown of Candy. It makes for a good character study by seeing how the interactions between Saccharina and Jet differ from Saccharina and Ruby's canon drama! I'm curious who my creator is, this is the second awesome D20 fic I got in exchanges recently :D

crumbs enough for everyone, D20: A Crown of Candy, Saccharina & Jet sibling bonding, rated T, 7k

I've also signed up for [community profile] rarefemslashex and I'm pretty happy with my assignment! I got some ideas where to go with it, I'm going to sleep on them and see which one crystallizes.

Watching
Being sick always lends itself to binge-watching random stuff I hadn't considered before! Most of it was spend on catching up on Ninja Warrior Germany 2023, ngl, and I did the traditional family group watch of godawful reality tv dating shows. But I also spend some time catching up on Netflix.

One Piece (Live Action)I've got mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, it's another nostalgia show and that wins it a lot of bonus points. On the other, both the manga and anime did it a lot better and with more emotional impact.

The streamlining in this one just didn't work for me, the pacing was way off. I get that they were trying to stuff as much crew-get-together into this with as many backstories as possible, and I don't fault it for that, but it hobbled the pacing something awful. The animanga starts slow and ramps up over time, whereas the Netflix show is much more constrained. And even then they spent a ludicruous amount of time on the stupid Marines subplot and ngl that just left me exasperated. They kept mixing up the message of what the Marines were supposed to stand for to the point I got whiplash inside the scenes. While I agree that Luffy's relationship to his grandpa is interesting, it just felt weirdly hamfisted and incongruous with the Shanks backstory. That's not even mentioning Ace and how he fits in! By giving Garp so much weight in the story, it felt like it muddled the actual message of the animanga and what Luffy stands for, especially since it needed to keep Garp vaguely sympathetic. If Garp is the authority Luffy is rebelling against, making him a sympathetic antagonist with wildly inconsistent messaging is... not the best choice. I appreciate the idea of Garp's character, but it just doesn't work, and imo it ruins Kobe's arc, too. Because Kobe is the good marine within a corrupted system - Luffy's counterpart in many ways, because Luffy is a Good Pirate amongst many Bad Pirates. And all of those great themes and comparisons were usurped because Luffy's grandpa was throwing a tantrum.

While I'm glad they cut Don Krieg's appearance short (he's such a borigng villain), I feel like the show didn't pull off the Baratie arc nor the Arlong Park arc. The cooks got too little screentime, especially for their relationship building with Sanji, and that undercut the emotional tension of Sanji leaving the Baratie behind to pursue his dreams. His fighting with Zeff also felt like it pulled the punches compared to the animanga. The whole "You should go." "Fine!" "Fine!" barely scratched the surface of their complicated relationship and made Sanji the weakest of the crew characters introduced, imo. And Arlong being suddenly interested in Luffy just because Buggy mentioned him bugged me. I don't recall it going that way in the anime/manga. Luffy should be beneath Arlong's notice until he shows up to punch his face in, but in an attempt to raise the stakes, Netflix had him attack the Baratie and it just doesn't work for me. Maybe if they'd cut out the Marines subplot, they would've had time for Nami's betrayal and fleshing out the tension and fights. The way it happened, Arlong didn't feel particularly dangerous, just another in a long row of minor villains.

Though I have to say, the show did a good job of highlighting the kindness of each crew member and how Luffy notices and values that trait. It's the most important theme of the Straw Hat Pirates, and that's one message the show managed to nail. They did surprisingly good with the outfits and crew banter, too - I wish we'd gotten more of those quiet crew moments, those were A+ - and the CGI and creature customes worked really well. They sold me on those fishmen being weird half-fish creatures rather than cosplay, e.g.

Yu Yu Hakusho (Live Action)It's been ages since I read the manga, but watching this felt like it absolutely nailed everything: the characters, the plot, the vibe. I guessed that it had been streamlined from the common shonen animanga meandering in early episodes, and I thought they did a great job of tying the first season together into one singular plot. The one change I could tell immediately was the whole escaped demon insect thingie, to give us stakes quicker, but I thought it was all really well done.

And then I went to watch (rewatch? I cannot for the life of me remember if I ever watched the anime. I know I prefered reading the manga back then, but fuck if I can recall) some of the relevant anime episodes and I was blown away by how much unnecessary detritus they cut out. The Netflix series did a great job setting Yusuke up as a reasonably misunderstood but well-intentioned protagonist, and I'm *relieved* that they skipped over the typical shonen anime comedy of up-skirt shots and female violent responses. Making Keiko and Yusuke childhood friends and centering that relationship worked much better than having Keiko be the class president in charge of Yusuke.

And despite all the changes, they stuck surprisingly close to the original canon, as far as I can tell. The major shift was a fantastic bait-and-switch in having the bad guys pretend to be Hiei when kidnapping Keiko, rather than have Hiei actually kidnap Keiko. It set up Hiei with a different start to his character, but I am honestly glad they skipped the villain-demon characterisation for the more emotional stakes and motivations of a kidnapped Yukina. Imo, that did a lot to smooth the early team-up, and changing the dark sword into a way for Hiei to gain his abilities rather than turn humans into demons was a clever choice. It makes sense to streamline the story like this and it worked really well for me! The Hiei we see here resembles his later incarnation in the manga more than his earlier, what with being more of an anti-hero.

The one thing about the Three Thieves mini arc that could've used another draft was the explanations (or lack thereof) of those three teaming up to steal the artefacts from escaped yokai (???) that were supposed to be Yusuke's next enemies. Nice way to raise the stakes, I guess, but it just falls apart the moment you take a closer look and doesn't do shit all to explain what the items are and why they're so dangerous to be lose in the human world (aside from Goki's orb, they do a good job showing that). Unlike the rest of the plot, that all just felt to be very out of nowhere.

My major complaint is that they did done dirty to poor Kurama with those wigs, both of them lack the proper flair Kurama deserves. Mostly it's in the bangs, imo, the straight fringe just does *nothing* for him. At least make it an uneven or fluffed up fringe!

And a minor complaint, I honestly would've preferred if they'd dropped the pacifier. Koenma's actor is hot af and I get the comedy value and wanting to stick close to the source material, but c'mon. Just let him be a hot teen, it's not like Enma-sama was even mentioned as plot pressure and thus irrelevant.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with this reimagining of a favourite old fandom. Maybe it's nostalgia goggles, but it was fun to watch old, beloved characters go on adventures again. The CGI was decent, too, and the plot and stakes surprisingly emotional for what I mostly fondly remember as a fight-centric manga with interesting characters.

Grimm (re)Watch with [personal profile] trobadoraIt's still fun! We're getting into the Hexenbiest!Juliette arc now and I'm very excited to see how that goes (and how things go wrong for Nick/Juliette). I love Theresa, she's a fun apprentice character. Sean's mother was a nice surprise, too, I love how Renard is such a momma's boy :D I'm sad she had to go again, though I understand the plot reasons, she was fun in how she interacted with everyone. The Wesenrein subplot is scary but fascinating for worldbuilding, poor Monroe and Rosalee deserve better. I wish they'd handled Adalind better, and I can't believe the show runners chose to ship her with Nick later, like wtf. After all these lies they told her about who took her baby and all the gaslighting that's happening and honestly they all handle that baby subplot horribly, no wonder Adalind blows up at them. (Not that Adalind is a cinnamon roll herself, I get why they distrust her, but jeez. The show runners clearly present our protagonists being in the right and so clever for doing it this way, I'm flabberghasted.)
miss_ingno: Dreamcatcher's Sua from BEcause, holding a white mask (Dreamcatcher)
Hi! Haven't gotten around to updating this blog in a while :') time passes quickly when you're busy!

Life UpdateI celebrated my birthday at the end of October, the first time I invited the entire (maternal side of the) family to my place since I moved in last November. It was fun, but quite a busy time, between baking cakes and cleaning everything up. I was glad I took a couple days off work before and after, or I would've been *really* stressed.

Among other things, I got the translated Guardian novel Vol. 1, a crotcheted lil dragon and new kitchen towels with a cute black kitten & pumpkin design :D!

(I invited some coworkers and friends for a second party, that's why the buttercream cake shows up twice!)

Work's been busy, too, with two co-workers calling in long-term sick. Hopefully one of them will make it back in December to ease the workload again, especially at this particularly busy time of year. Flu's going around as well - I caught the cold early on but managed to push on for a couple weeks, but finally caught the ear infection the kids are all trading between each other (that's what I get for helping out in the daycare section of the job RIP) so now I'm on sick leave. Fingers crossed I can go back to work on Wednesday, but right now it's not looking too great just yet.

The cases at least are interesting? One of mine is getting to the final stage, in a positive way, which is great to watch. Another of the new cases is a difficult nut to crack, but I'm hopeful to establish a good working relationship with them.

DreamcatcherThey just put out a new short album! I'm very happy with all the songs on it, even if the fandom seems divided on the title track OOTD (it *is* a departure from their usual style, but in a very imo predictable way. They've been leaning into this style as far back as Odd Eye, with BEcause being the major exception. It's still very clearly uniquely Dreamcatcher in vibe and sound, with experimental mixing of genres into what otherwise might be Just Another Mainstream song. And the BSides have at least two very cool songs with more of a rock/metal vibe for any disappointed fans to make up for it imo.

I'm very interested in the whole... "fakeness" of the MV and concept. Like, they took a typical girl crush concept with a very retro vibe rather than high-glam-fashion and then the main dance outfits being those leather-jacket white top combos? It makes for an interesting visual, especially with all the car driving and motorcycle straddling. The "bts"/"editing" style of the MV also gives it a vibe of robotic/in progress - which really leads well into the surprise ending of the members going dead-eyed and killing the camerawoman. I'm excited to find out what the narrative idea of this Villains arc will be! But taken on its own, the message to me seems to read how fake the industry is, how robotic the girl groups, and Dreamcatcher ones more breaking out of expectations (as they have done since they rebranded Minx into Dreamcatcher).

Rising is absolutely my favourite of the songs tho, it's so catchy, and the whole "Ri-ri-ri-ri-ri-rising" is GREAT :D Shatter took me a bit to get used to - I immediately liked the melodic soft parts, but wasn't quite sure of the contrast to the "Bang It On Me" chorus. It's a very metal song in the same vibe of other woman-lead metal bands I love, while still uniquely Dreamcatcher. Definitely looking forward to learning the dance choreo to it and OOTD! (Though I'm still behind, I haven't even touched Bon Voyage and Demian yet *sobs* I need more time in the day!)

ExchangesI signed up for [community profile] fandomtrees - here's my tree! I requested three Kpop MV canons (Dreamcatcher's Deja Vu & Vision, and Loona's love4eva), three cdramas (Guardian, GYADL, and Love Between Fairy And Devil), the short (not quite indie) game "Song of Nunu" (a League of Legends story) and the DnD tableplay "A Crown of Candy" from Dimension 20.

I finished my gifts (and now, edits) for the [community profile] ficinabox exchange, though I have some ideas of how to polish up one of them a bit more. I'm torn between picking up pinch hits, finishing any of the treats I started, or working on my other assignments.

Because I'm also signed up to [community profile] fffx and [community profile] yuletide_admin. For the first, I'm 2k into the story and have a strong idea of what I want to do with it; for the latter I just did a canon review to refresh my memories of the canon and am still brainstorming ideas. There's so many options, and I want to do all of them! :( why does the day only have 24hrs (and why do I have to spend so many of them at work, grumbles)

I've also been writing some more on my posted WIP In This, As In All Things, which I hadn't meant to put on pause for so long, but, well. Life happened *shrugs*. I'm gonna get the next three chapters done before posting (chapter 5 is close to done and I got a decent chunk of 6 going already), and then I need to figure out what I need to happen so I can wrap it up. It's always been one of the more vibes-focussed fics I've written, and the things I wanted out of it (confrontations of older!Weilan with Zhao Xinci) don't seem as plausible anymore now that I'm writing it. Or at least, the two different things I have in mind are vastly different in tone so I'll have to pick one over the other, le sigh.

Gonna try and post more again (and share my thoughts on Song of Nunu and Love Between Fairy And Devil, since I finished those two now) and soon!

Dancing

I've tried out a kpop dance course in July and officially joined after summer hols this month! We've been practicing Aya from Mamamoo, last week we learned the chorus part of Jihyo's Killing Me Good (though my timing is... so off. I need a better spot to keep an eye on the trainer), and now we started on the chorus of Fast Forward by Jeon Somi, which we'll continue next week. It's pretty fun, overall, and a great breather from the stress at work.

Writing

I've switched between writing a couple different fandoms for various exchanges recently (a rarepairex treat, three fandomgiftbasket fills, two of which are done, my fffx assignment). It's been fun delving back into nostalgic anime fandoms like Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. Ygo! was my first fandom-fandom, actually. My first ever fanfic was a Mary Sue self-insert who got saved by Seto Kaiba lol. I think her name was Laila? Leia? And there's gonna be two Deja Vu fics. I had to rewrite my original fill because it accidentally got too close to a DNW, but I love both and they're different enough that I feel good publishing both.

I put in my swap wishes for fiab, too, so hopefully this multifandom trend will continue!

Grimm is super fun to write and I'm close to finishing a couple fics to post. There's a lot of second hand knowledge from my job going into the pregnancy fic. The last smutty bits in the canon divergence OT3 rewrite are fighting me, but once I can stitch it all together, I'm hitting post. So excited to share!

However, Guardian wishlists are hella distracting. I've already seen three prompts I /need/ to write, and there's still people signing up! What do!?

Watching

I've been watching Dimension 20's Mentopolis, and omg it's so good! I hate having to wait a whole week for a new episode, but so far, definitely worth it! The main characters are the personalisations of Hyperfixation (played by Hank Green), Impulse, Attention, Pleasure, Curiosity and Conscience, and they're all super fun! It's set in a detective noir mystery setting inside the brain, which is super fun :D!

Grimm Rewatch is going well. I'm excited to start season 3 tonight, I have very little memories of what happened in it. Juliette continues to be my blorbo, and the fic ideas keep multiplying.

Really need to pick Cang Lan Jue (Love Between Fairy And Devil) back up, I made it to episode 11/12 last October before my new workplace ate up my time. The body switch trope is giving me a lot of second hand embarrassment, so it's been hard to start again, no matter how much I originally loved it!

Exchanges
I've signed up to [community profile] guardian_wishlist! I'm very excited for another round of my favourite fandom event of the year :D

I'm also signed up to [community profile] fffx, in which the wordcount minimum is 10k. My assignment is awesome, and I already got 1k of snippets written up and a decent outline. There's more than enough time to write this fic, but I hope I don't lose track of or motivation for writing it midway through. Actually gonna try to finish it by November, just to get done first!

[community profile] ficinabox is happening soon, too. I nominated a bunch of my favourite fandoms, now I just need to find some requests I can write for. It's also a 10k assignment, but one that can be broken into 1k-10k pieces plus has a lot of interesting variant mediums. The swapping systems sounds confusing but fun. We'll see if I can actually sign up!

Writing
I've fiddled with a gift or two for [community profile] fandomgiftbasket, but mostly I'm writing Grimm TV fic x'D mostly about my main ship, the OT3 of Nick/Renard/Juliette.

One of them is a kidfic series - I have no idea why, but those always appeal to me, seeing the characters I love navigate parenthood and how the worldbuilding impacts raising children within it. So far I've started on the 1st instalment dealing with Juliette's pregnancy, and one where the kid is in kindergarden :3 I do want Kelly Burkhardt (Nick's mom) to show up and be confused by her son's triad relationship and whose kid is this anyway, that's gonna be another fun instalment.

Another is a fix-it rewrite where I diverge somewhere mid-to-late season 1 with having the OT3 start a triad relationship and revealing several secrets much sooner than in canon, and then go through said canon situations with these changed factors to see how that impacts canon's timeline. It's gonna be a series, too, and I doubt I'll address all plots, but :D

Work
Work's busy but fine, I'm really acclimating well and getting a better handle of my job's duties. We have a new coworker I'm helping getting up to speed, which is really a nice mirror of how far I've grown in the last 8 months. We're having a team-bonding event on Friday, so I'll miss Guardian Rewatch, but I'm looking forward to it!

Work

Work's been interesting! And kinda exhausting, too. My favourite co-worker is leaving us, which sucks. Here's hoping we can stay in contact *fingers crossed* I'm taking over her case, which... is definitely part of the reason she's leaving (even if she says it's not, it's obviously a stress factor), it's a hard case. And the case is also getting kicked out for lack of cooperation and inappropriate behaviour. So that's been a lot of fun meetings! Which will continue into next week, OTL. But it's interesting to see how I can rise to the challenge? Like, it's sapping me of energy, sure, but I'm also handling it really well (my boss even said so!) Not that I thought I couldn't exactly, but it's one think to imagine vs actually experiencing.

It's also fascinating to see—we got a new kid to reunite with their parents, and most of the other kids here are in the same age range. I'm going to get a very skewed impression of child development working here, they're all pretty behind. So the new kid being at a normal stage for her age was a bit of a shock and wake-up call ^^

Watching

Really having fun with [personal profile] trobadora rewatching the series Grimm (TV)! Juliette is definitely my blorbo, although I love all the characters. I've already started on my first fic for this show :'D We're in early season 2 and I remember a surprising lot. I'm raising my estimate that I originally watched at least some of early season 3, too ^^

The Guardian rewatch continues to be fun, too! I've managed to join the discord rewatch group a couple times now and will join again tomorrow. I'm behind on notes taking, though, I had to focus on exchange writing and other life stuff. Looking forward to picking it back up when work hopefully calms down.

Exchanges

Speaking of exchanges... I've signed up for [community profile] fandomgiftbasket here! I'm requesting Art/Graphics/Meta/Fic/Fanvids for two kpop music videos (Dreamcatcher's Deja Vu, and Loona's love4eva). The first is high fantasy with lesbians & betrayal, the second is four girls in a boarding school setting (and possibly also betrayal lol. Drama! *jazz hands*). I'm also asking for the fandoms Dimension 20 - A Crown of Candy, specifically stuff that centers the Rocks Family, the above mentioned Grimm (TV), and Granting You A Dreamlike Life, my beloved trash cdrama :3 who doesn't want some badass and bloody Luo Fusheng in their life?

Since Wishlist is happening soon, I opted out of adding Guardian to my basket.

I'm also nominating like crazy for the Five Figure Fanworks exchange ([community profile] fffx) in the hopes of participating. One 10k fic or two 5k fics seems doable, as long as someone signs up with a fandom/prompts I can write <3

Also! I got an incredible gift for [community profile] fandom5k, I'm really looking forward to finding out who wrote for me :D

Title: Honey, you're familiar
Fandom: Nirvana in Fire
Ship: Mei Changsu | Lin Shu/Mu Nihuang/Xiao Jingyan
Tags: canon divergence, fix-it, minor h/c, arranged marriage
Summary: And in they walk: Jingrui with his city manner and his Jianghu style, Yujin with his refined clothes and his broad-faced grin. And behind them walks Lin Shu-gege.

Nihuang blinks. The man is at once unrecognisable and evident. There is nothing about Lin Shu-gege in his face, in his gait, in his height, and yet Nihuang knows him. Deep in her soul, she knows him. The boy she played with, the teenager she flirted with, the man she loved. He could not be Lin Shu-gege, because he was nothing like him and Lin Shu-gege was dead. He could not be anyone else.

*

“Who are you?” he demands.

And then xiao-Shu stands up and looks him in the eyes.

It is nothing. A trick of the light. Jingyan has run into xiao-Shu in the face of strangers hundreds of times. He’s been a ghost turning a corner, just out of reach.

And yet… And yet. Those ghosts who had not been xiao-Shu had had a familiar angle to their jawline. A familiar curve to their nose. A familiar joy in their smile.

This man has none of these. He simply is.

It's an absolutely amazing mix of my prompts an I love it!💖 It has Mu Nihuang and Xiao Jingyan recognising Mei Changsu as Lin Shu, yet playing along with his secret identity shenanigans and working to keep him safe. It's a nice reversal of the canon, and the author *nailed* the character voices, especially Mu Nihuang. Go check it out! It's so worth it 💖

Sorry, I haven't been active much! Work is exhausting and the cold I caught finally got to me, I had to call in sick (I really should have called in sick for today, too, but I already promised to take the late shift and don't wanna back out last minute... ngggh...)

The stuffy brain means I haven't really had the attention span to do much writing or watching - I'm behind on the Guardian rewatch, both commenting and taking my own notes. Hoping to catch up on this soon.

Candy Hearts Exchange

I got an amazing Candyhearts gift. It's got everything I asked for, I'm so damn pleased :D I highly recommend everyone check it out!

I'm dealing with a lot irl right now (my February work schedule is ridiculous, probably because I'm the most flexible this month. Here's hoping all my sick coworkers recover soon 🤞)

    Interior Design

I will upload some pictures soon, once I actually have time to declutter my apartment – I've been called in to cover coworkers shifts on half my free days, and spent the rest buying the furniture/lamps/carpets... xD

    Internet

I finally got internet Friday last week, and now it's gone on the fritz not a week later. Been having connectivity problems since Friday and can't connect at all since yesterday... Hence why I'm posting this from work WiFi on my break x')

    Writing

I was hoping to finish my candy hearts assignment yesterday, before I got called in to work... I'm close to done, I just need to sit down and wrap those scenes up! And there's one more scene I really want to add, it's not exactly necessary but I think it'll make the plot flow more smoothly.

In Guardian news, I posted a new WIP! Next chapter is written and will be posted on Feb 13/14.

Title: In This, As In All Things (1/?)
    Rating: T
    Ship: Weilan
    Words: 3.3k
Tags: WIP, time travel fix it, post-canon to pre-canon, identity shenanigans

Summary: Given the chance to right the wrongs of the past, Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei go back to before they met (again).

But how much can they change faced with a very different SID than the one under Zhao Yunlan's lead?
miss_ingno: Zhu Hong in a red dres, text saying "Bitch, please" (Zhu Hong)
I'm hosting the most recent Scene Discussion over at [community profile] sid_guardian! Check out Episode 4: SID sets a trap, Zhu Hong and Da Qing are kidnapped. (And I made myself a new icon to match :3)

    Personal

It looks like I might get my internet fixed soon! The technician hasn’t been here yet, but the internet provider sent out e-mails with new links to re-activate the contracted payment account (we didn’t have to pay during the lack of service). I’m taking that as a sign it’ll happen this week.

    Writing

I should probably start making a priority list of some kind, with all the things I’m signing up for and planning to write x’) So here’s my January/February list with deadlines:
    1. Fandomtrees Gift #1 done
    2. Fandomtrees Gift #2 (almost done) – Jan 11
    3. a League of Legends fic for a 3rd tree gift (unlikely) Jan 11
    4. Weilan time-travel fix-it for Bingo Square “Promise” – Jan 31
    5. Shen Wei’s alpha/omega biology lecture for Bonus Prompt “Keep On Going” – Jan 31
    6. Guardian Vampire Sequel for Bonus Prompt “Supernatural Elements” – Jan 31
    7. Candy Hearts Ex assignment – Feb 7
    8. Red Pockets claim: Weilan can’t dance – open ended, vaguely end of Feb
    9. Unrevealed Secret Red Pocket – open ended, vaguely end of Feb

I also wanted to look into the possibility of writing treats for [personal profile] candyheartsex… I’ll have to wait and see how January goes though. At this point, I’ve definitely overcommitted. However, I was aware that I’m unlikely to finish both the time-travel andthe vampire sequel simultanousely, since both are relatively long fics. Still considering whether I want to post them as unfinished WIPs or not…

    Belated Yuletide Post

I haven’t been able to read many of the yuletide fics sadly, hence why I haven’t made a rec post yet… I read everything in the Time Engraver, Guardian novel, and Princess On Top fandoms and whole-hearted recommend you check them out, too!

Including the beautiful story I received from [personal profile] plingo_kat: sharing moonlight, a beautiful Weilan & Da Qing & Zhao family fic. Seriously, the family dynamics are so incredibly inticrate and very Chinese. I couldn’t have asked for a better gift!
“Are you sure your mother wouldn’t like flowers?” Shen Wei resettles his innocuous professor glasses over the bridge of his nose, inkbrush eyebrows furrowed.

I also wrote a little story, a worldbuildy Time Engraver fic featuring the female character from the second ad: Inevitable. Please check it out, if you have time :)

...and a Happy New Year 🥳

I'm visiting my parents, we're usually celebrating in a small family gathering. Just my parents, my brother and I. I don't think I could spend New Year's alone, but I appreciate the lack of big party. I like them just fine occasionally but I prefer the comfort of No Strangers and not having to watch what I say/do (and the lack of alcohol being forced on me).

I'm excited for what's to come – things are happening at work, I'm getting a new case tomorrow (Jan 2nd). I'm interested to learn who I'll be working with!

Here's hoping it won't eat up all my writing time, I started two fandomtrees gifts, neither of which are finished yet 😅

    Writing

I'm on a writing spree! It's like now that my brain stopped being stuffed, the creativity just flooded back in. If I had time, I'd probably spend 24 hours on working on various fics straight...

I'm 4 bingo squares away from blackout, and I'm honestly champing at the bit to finish it (even though we can take it into the new year). Officially, January is the end date (plus a catch up month for all the bonus prompts one may have missed). So I'll definitely have the opportunity! I have two bonus fills I can switch in still, so really I'm only missing 2. One of them is gonna be a Weilan Time Travel Fix-It (current title In This, As In All Things) I've been chipping away at... might post the first chapters despite not being finished if time runs out, though XD

I recently finished a longer WIP I've been working on, and today I wrapped up a shorter thing.

    Title: No Sweeter Innocence
    Rating: T
Ship: Kunlun/Shen Wei, Zhao Yunlan/Shen Wei
    Words: 9.7k
Tags: Gods AU, God!Kunlun, Disciple!Shen Wei, Secret Identity, Identity Reveal, Love Triangle (with Kunlun playing his own love rival lol), First Kiss, Forbidden Love, emotional H/C, jealousy, happy ending, rituals, wedding, religious cults, virgin sacrifice (but no smut)

Summary: Shen Wei was raised in the temple as a devoted disciple to Kunlun. He is elated to be chosen as the sacrifice Kunlun's bride...
...if only he wasn't in love with Zhao Yunlan, the merchant boy from the next town over.

Title: Love Me Forever (Or Not At All)
    Rating: T
    Ship: Kunlun/Shen Wei
    Words: 2.1k
Tags: Vampire AU, backstory, vampire!Kunlun, human!Shen Wei, Kunlun raises Shen Wei, Kunlun turns Shen Wei, blood drinking, non-graphic vampire sex, casual mentions of violence, Canonical Major Character Death (Kunlun), Temporary Sad Ending

Summary: Kunlun always wanted a pet, but he didn't ask for a human. The kid grows on him, anyway. In more ways than one.

    Yuletide & Fandom Events 2k23

I fortunately finished my yuletide fic shortly before the deadline - I really worried I wouldn't make it, but missed the defaulting deadline due to fever, so I figured, fuck it. And hey, I think it turned out well! My beta liked it anyway :D I'm excited for my recipee to read it.

Generally, I've been having fun dipping my toes in more fandom events this year. I think for next year, I want to participate in more, as I have the time? Write less on my personal stuff (though that, too, whenever the mood strikes) and just. Interact more. I've been meaning to work on several projects that aren't Guardian, anyway (a GYADL fic, finishing my Untamed fic, the like) and I'm feeling motivated to tackle tiny fandoms I don't know anyone in, thanks to all the yuletide excitement. Hopefully I won't feel the lack of comments/validation too much, being busy with work x'D that's been one of my primary motivators in previous years of sticking with just the one fandom, aside from meeting fandom friends with the same obsession. (And really, Weilan is still very much #1 in my brain. The Kinnporsche series tried sneaking in there with its unhealthy dark VegasPete, but I forgot about them in less than a month lol).

I... don't actually know all that many fandom events, tho, especially not ones crossing multiple fandoms ^^" I would love some recs and descriptions of how they work? I've heard of fandomtrees and battleshipex this year, but I'm not quite sure what the latter is and I really would love some for the first half of the year. I will definitely do the Reverse Sundial again if it's running!

    Health & Work

I'm still recovering from my cough (turned out to be bronchitis. I'm getting better day by day, but it's been a slow and torturous process). Went back to work on Monday, which was probably a day or two too early but I felt bad for already taking 1.5 weeks of sick leave *shrugs* it's a flaw of mine I'm working on. Next time, hopefully, I'll be able to prioritize my health with less of an internal guilt trip.

Anyway, half my team caught the same cold by now, so we're understaffed af. It's gonna be a couple interesting (read: exhausting) days. I'm just glad we're at half capacity right now or I might very well throw hands.

    Watching

Due to my lack of steady internet access (seriously, how hard can it be to connect the damn box?? The cables are set up already! They just need to add the damn box *grumbles*) I've been re-watching Nirvana In Fire since I have a downloaded copy. It's still very gripping despite knowing exactly what's going on! Just got to the Prince Yu rebellion part, and the moment Nihuang shows up with reinforcements had me crying with relief. Just goes to show how well made this drama is, the pacing and tension is impecable. I definitely stayed up later an hour or two because I was at a tense part a couple nights <.<

If I didn't have so many obligations and WIPs right now, I'd probably be writing NiF fic now xD If anyone has recs, I'd love to read more! Especially any court intrigue/politics ones or generally good character pieces. (I have such a yearning for Jingyan being protective of MCS, like divergences where Prince Yu's plot to create a rift between them fails because Jingyan Trusts or Knows... it was such delicious angst, let me have my comfort fantasies :'D)

    Writing

I really need to sit down and finish my yuletide fic. I didn't expect things to be quite this busy and complicated. Falling sick definitely set me back on my schedule, and the fact that I don't have decent internet is a pain, too. I've got nearly 1k of the main scene, which might turn out to be the only scene after all, my ambitious goals for this fic are definitely not achievable until the deadline. I'm trying to cram as much worldbuilding goodness into it as I can! Which might actually be for the best, rather than sprawling musings. Much more focussed story-telling, for sure.

Fingers crossed my giftee will like the end result! I'm probably not gonna get around to writing treats though, sadly...

On that note, I just posted this WIP I've been chipping away at for ages:

    Title: What Lies In Darkness
    Rating: E for smut
    Ship: Weilan
    Words: 7k
Tags: Eldritch AU, eldritch horror!Shen Wei, monsterfucker!Zhao Yunlan, tentacle sex, worldbuilding, void cat!Da Qing, reincarnation (sort of)

    Summary:
While snooping through Shen Wei's apartment, Zhao Yunlan ends up entangled in secrets better left undisturbed.

His curiosity might kill him, but oh, does Shen Wei satisfy him. Multiple times.

    Moving

Spent the day moving into my new flat! Still a lot to do (we mostly managed to assemble and arrange the furniture, all the cartons are stacked in a corner to be dealt with later). Even got two lamps working, three more to go. My parents are coming over again next weekend to help me with more lamps, curtains, and stuff.

Big plus point is, the washing machine works! \o/ and my kitchen will be delivered and installed on Wednesday, so it feels like lots and lots of progress :)

On the downside, internet/phone cable/TV isn't done yet, the provider is dragging their feet. So I'll only have 'net via my work WiFi for a bit, updates/responses night get more irregular. Silver lining, I won't be distracted from writing <.
miss_ingno: portrait by Jacey Chase (portrait)

    Moving

My landlord finally called, I'm getting the keys to my flat a week early, this Wednesday the 9th :D I've been busy organizing all my helpers and my dad rented a transporter van to get all my furniture there on Saturday. I've emptied out most of the stuff now, there's only my nightstand, the stuff on my desk and half a cabinet left to pack up so we can take the furniture apart and ready for transport. My kitchen has also already arrived at the studio I ordered at, depending on when their mechanics' schedule for next week, I might get it early! If not, the 25th November is already saved for me.

    Work

has been interesting. I've done a Sunday and Saturday shift now, and it's mostly chill considering we're at half capacity. I'm officially in charge of one of the families living there since last week, and they've taken to the change pretty well. I'm excited for the new ones coming next year, too, very interested in how the whole intake process goes, I've only seen the remnants of paperwork for that so far.

    Writing

had to be put on the backburner sadly. I'm close to done with my eldritch!Shen Wei tentacle smut though, it's just missing a bit of the smut and a little paragraph in the ending scene. Got stuck on the altar sacrifice AU which I really wanted to post in October, my brain has been too overwhelmed with new work stuff. It's slowly clearing up though, and I think after the move I'll have more time.

    Listening

I ended up listening to a bunch of episodes of the Knowledge Fight podcast towards the end of September/in October, which covers the topic of Alex Jones' spreading of misinformation in very close detail. Mostly I listened to the court cases related episodes, very interesting insight in this sort of right wing extremism, the conspiracy world and the US legal system. If you're interested, I'd recommend the episodes they did with Mark Bankston, the plaintiff's attorney in Texas, and Elizabeth Williamson, author of the book "Sandy Hook: An American Tragedy and the Battle for Truth". Also, I checked out some relevant Opening Arguments episodes, too, and then got sidetracked into their January 6 investigation coverage. Lots of heavy stuff, but I'm just far enough removed that it was more fascinating than dreadful.
miss_ingno: portrait by Jacey Chase (portrait)
Work's going well enough. I have my reservations, but I'm taking things as they come. Once January comes around, I'll be able to judge the stress factor much more accurately. Gonna have my first Sunday shift this weekend, those are supposed to be fun and chill!

Yuletide is looking great! Ngl, the fandom I was matched on wasn't the one I was hoping for (any excuse to write more GYADL xD), but already I'm teeming with ideas on how to fulfill my recip's prompt. I'm very excited to see if they like it! I've written the core scene's dialogue so far, hopefully once I'm moved into my own flat I'll have more time to flesh it all out <3

And if I have time... there's a Treat or two I could imagine writing <.< depends heavily on how busy the time leading up to the deadline is tho :')

Still super obsessed with Vision by Dreamcatcher, I actually started writing a ficlet for it, too xD The dance is looking cool, I can't wait to start practicing it, either! (and that, too, will have to wait till after moving RIP)

Re: Moving, there's still so much to pack and so little time >.< I'm lucky that I can store most of my stuff at my parents', so I only really need to empty out the closest and drawers, and yet, having worked on that every weekend I've been visiting, I'm still not done :') I do think I can get most of it wrapped up next weekend though.
miss_ingno: portrait by Jacey Chase (portrait)

    Birthday

It's my birthday today! :D I drove back "home" to my parents, we're celebrating with my grandparents and cousin this afternoon with cake and dinner. The weather is very sunny and I'm excited (and everyone's been so generous with gifts Q.Q I needed quite a few things for my new flat, and everyone in my fam has been chipping in or lending me money so I can get the necessities)

    Work

The first week went well! The team used to be super understaffed the last couple months, so they reduced the number of clients in residence (or whatever you call them in English - I think I'm sticking with "residents" but apparently social work cases are usually called clients? That feels wrong to my sensibilities tho x'D) to half. We're 4 new people, one colleague started the same week as I, the others started last month. It's a lot of chaos (because a lot of things are changing in the next few months, partially due to the previous staff leaving thanks to burnout, there's a restructuring happening on the organizational level).

It's pretty chill to get trained on the job though, with enough staff to train all of us and few enough residents to make for a light workload. On the flipside, I'm not gonna know what the usual state of busy is until January or so when we'll take on new clients. Ah, well. Until then I'll have a much better grasp of my tasks and responsibilites. Plus my employer offers a couple trainings for certifications I'm interested in, I'll have to check with my supervisor if I can join any of them next year!

    Temporary Housing

I'm getting along great with the widow I'm staying at (a friend of my grandparents'), we watch quiz shows together in the evening and she's taken me on a trip through the city to see all the sights already. She's super accomodating and a sweetheart <3 (and I bet she's gonna come visit me once I'm moving into my flat)

    Writing

...is not gonna happen for a bit. Once I'm properly trained on the job I'll have an easier time (and I'm decent at typing on mobile, but I miss writing on a keyboard, so more productivity once I move into my flat). Right now, my brain is busy processing all the work related knowledge, there's not much space for creativity. But I'm looking forward to yuletide assignments! Hopefully that'll kickstart the writing part of my brain again <3
miss_ingno: chibi!Missy by squigglysky (LFS challenge smile)
Alright, I'm off to my temp housing! I will probably have internet access, if not the best and only on mobile, so the most likely way to reach me will be discord :')

Work's starting on Monday and I'm nervous-excited! I'm not the only newbie, there's a second new employee starting concurrently.

And fingers crossed I'll get this first weekend off (weekend shifts are A Thing, but I assume that since I'm still on training wheels for the first couple weeks, that maybe not the first weekend??) because my birthday is on Saturday and I'd really like to celebrate with fam ^^"

Also also! As you might've guessed per my Letter post, I signed up for Yuletide! I'm excited and a little anxious there, too, since it's my first time. I keep ping-ponging on some of the fandoms I've offered whether I actually want to offer them or not... x')
    miss_ingno: chibi!Missy by squigglysky (Default)
Lots happening in less than a week again! I really hope things calm down soon :'D

    Re: moving
The widow of a former colleague of my grandpa's lives less than 20 minutes from where I'm gonna start working soon, and gramps mentioned me looking for temporary housing until my flat is finish mid-November; she offered me a room for the time in-between. Which I'll probably take her up on, temporary housing costs more for a month than most of the monthly rent options I've been looking at (which are already way too high imo! I mean, I get that heating costs are going up along oil/gas prices, but sheesh) and what she offers is incredibly, humblingly generous. Though it means I'll probably have spotty internet access at best for the time being. Still, 100% worth it.

    Re: fanfic
Finally wrapped up and posted the last chapter of Shen Wei, Accidental Lesbian Whisperer, a wishlist gift for [personal profile] elenothar from last year ^^" took me forever, but I'm pretty happy with the end result! (and very grateful to Elenothar's endless patience and reassurance that she wouldn't mind if I never finished it <3)

    Waching: Detective L
I'm now on episode 15 and I feel like the whole Arson case is confirming my "Huo Wensi is Moriarty" theory. Sorry, but nothing (including the drama) can convince me otherwise at this point xD he's being positioned too obviously as Luo Fei's foil, pretending to be empathetic (but does not; whereas Luo Fei is pretending not to care but does too much), blending in where Luo Fei doesn't. The creepy-smug serial killer smiles are NOT helping him at all, either!

I've been warned that the ending is going to be a bit unsatisfying, the last three episodes especially are said to be extremely rushed? I'm curious but open to it at this point (and looking forward to fic for fixes lol if anyone's got a rec...)

    Listening: JiYoo's Monster cover
So Jiu and Yoohyeon (Dreamcatcher) did a cover of Irene & Seulgi (Red Velvet)'s Monster, and ngl I live for it. I like the original better now that I've listened to the cover on loop, too xD I adore the visuals too, like the girls are kpop veterans now, and still do these kind of high-quality covers? Damn. (And it's rumoured that this was Yoohyeon's passion project, she's been hinting at wanting to do a specific cover with Jiu for a while in vlives, apparently... <.< I don't have time to keep up with those but I think it shows!)

    Reading: Guardian novel
Started on my third attempt to make it through the novel! (The first time, I didn't realize RainbowSe7en's TL was unfinished and was then floundering where to continue. The second time I got too busy irl and was then distracted by fic xD Fingers crossed I'll make it further this time!) It reminded me how much I adore early novel!Zhu Hong's raw thirst and disgust with Zhao Yunlan lmao. I really want fic that leans into that... if I do Yuletide, I might request something along those lines <.
miss_ingno: LFS making the shocked pikachu face (shocked LFS face)
Phew, it's been a week! A lot has been going on :')

    Employment Stuff

My various applications turned into a job interview on Thursday (the 8th), which kickstarted my Week of Busy. I don't even recall if I posted about it. I meant to? But idk if I ended up doing it. It went well enough, and I ended up obsessing over a handful of answers I gave that I didn't think were good enough, as is my wont. Gotta learn somehow how to do it better next time, right?

Friday (the 9th) they called me back. To offer me the job \o/

Ngl, it still hasn't really sunk in. Apparently I left quite the impression? They told me it would take them at least a week to inform me if I made it, and here I was the day after, totally unprepared! I took the weekend to think about it (but really, I started looking for apartments pretty much immediately, so when I called on Monday to accept, I had a couple viewings lined up already). My starting date is on Oct 15th, which is super short-term and is making finding stuff harder.

Except then on Wednesday, the first time I went to viewings -- the second flat was it. I have the rent contract on my desk already! WTF. It arrived in the mail yesterday. I can only move in early November (the building is still in the middle of being build, they're in the end stage but it's already clear they're not gonna make the Oct 31st deadline. My landlord said he'd prioritize my flat getting checked so I can hopefully move in by the 5th, but it might be as late as the 15th.) So my mom helped me look for alternatives for the weeks before that happens, and we already have two or three options lined up. All of this in less than a week! I'm exhausted OTL (so many appointments to set up and then cancel again... hahaha...)

    Cultural Differences
Anyway, this whole adventure in applying for jobs brought to my attention that the concept of Social Pedagogy isn't much of a thing out of Europe? Lmk in a comment if you've heard of it before and where you're from I'm curious xD I've been explaining it to my US/Canadian friends as a cross between social and educational work within the mental health field, but I feel like that doesn't quite cover the range while at the same time not being specific enough :')

    Guardian Wishlist

The long drives to all my appointments left me with plenty of time to dive into the Wishlist collection and read my way through almost all the fic on offer and check out all the art! Plus checking out some of the writers' other works I've had in my TBR pile forever x'D

Also! I created a late gift for [personal profile] trobadora! I took my first day of some free time to sit down with the WIP and hammered out 2.5k within a day, sent it off to [personal profile] yantantether for beta and posted it all in one fell swoop. Which really, that's just the sort of feral energy this week's been. I'm very happy how it turned out :D

    Title: Safe In Your Hands
    Rating: M for smut
    Ship: Weilan
    Words: 4.1k
Tags: D/s, undernegotiated kink & improvised kink negotiation, with a dash of post-coital kink negotiation, established relationship, post-canon handwave-y fix-it, light bondage, manhandling, dark energy use

Summary: All Shen Wei wanted was for Zhao Yunlan to stop touching the Hallows.
miss_ingno: portrait by Jacey Chase (portrait)
A lot's been going on, and I haven't really been posting :'D sorry!

    Employment
I went for a job interview yesterday and despite saying they would need at least a week to confer, they ended up calling me back today and offered me the job! I have until Monday to decide, but I'm pretty hype :D moving to the location is proving more difficult though, there's not a lot of apartments that are both equipped at least with a kitchen + within my price range. So that's gonna be the next adventure :')

Side-gig hasn't been too terrible recently, but that was mostly due to school being out for summer hols. Now that school started back up, so did stress at work. Can't say I'll miss it once I start at the new place xD

    Wishlist event
Very excited to report I managed to finish 4 out of the 6 wishlist fills I started! I'm sorely tempted to keep working on the two WIPs too, they're both fine ideas and at least the smut is close to the halfway mark at this point. The more plotty one needs more fine-tuning still, but it's an idea I love and have considered before, I really wanna go with it.

And [community profile] guardian_wishlist reveals happen tomorrow! According to the spreadsheet, I got a lovely number of gifts waiting for me. Gonna have to juggle wanting to dive into them with all the things I need to prep for my potential work move ^^"

    Watching
I have binge-watched the first 5 episodes of Love Between Devil and Fairy (Cang Lan Jue) and am obsessed. Enough that I am tempted to get one of the VIP passes to see the rest, even if my better sense is prevailing :') I just want to watch the rest and participate in the fandom talk already! TT__TT

So I landed on picking Detective L back up and made it all the way to the end of episode 9! Interested in what's up with the Captain (though I've been told to temper my expectations for cleverness of the plot lol) and if Huo Wensi turns out to be a serial killer (my current theory. He gives me strong creeper vibes).
    miss_ingno: chibi!Missy by squigglysky (Default)
Recharging has been going well! I've allowed myself to just chill and do things as they occur to me/catch my interest, no pressure at all, and that's been working out so far (I mean, I do have to buy groceries/do the cooking, but luckily living in a 4 adults household means everyone else picks up some of the necessary chores too, and they've allowed me to relax after the stress of applications double-week).

I've been re-reading a lot of comfort fic, mostly Teen Wolf (which is tempting me to actually watch a season of the show, which I haven't lol). I've also skimmed the occasional research that came across my dash and caught up on British politics via the Big Dog's Adventures posts.

I also started listening to Welcome to Night Vale again from the start. I used to listen to it while it was on-going back in '12-'14 before I got too depressed and sleep-deprived (and didn't remember the plot well enough because like. Neither depression nor sleep deprivation are conducive to memory). I tried getting back into it back in '18 but couldn't figure out where I had left off. So I figured starting from scratch is the way to go! I'm into Year 2 now, and I remember a lot more about these early episodes than I thought. I'm getting close to the live show where I'm pretty sure the mayoral election happened.

In dancing news, the heat really put a damper on my Exercise Daily! plan lol. Doesn't help that I fucked over my sleep schedule (and due to health issues I needed 10 hour sleeps for the first couple days) and it's not like I can put on music and hop around at 4am. Tho I did do one with the rising sun outside today, as was originally the plan for summer heat!

Anyway, I added a tutorial for HIP by Mamamoo (which I'm playing at 75% even if the slow section is already slowed down to 50% because I need precision before I need speed, especially in this heat wave), a chorus tutorial for Honey by Solar (of Mamamoo), and mirrors of Dreancatcher's
Jiu's Cherry and Beauty Full by Dreamcatcher's Dami. Both these mirrors are not... ideal because they're fancams of concerts, but since DC hasn't put out dance practices (and at this point I'm kinda doubting they will, since the choreos are kinda easy) I'm dealing with what I have. Considering adding Gahyeon's Playground to the mix if I can even find a mirror in the first place. Playful beat and easy dance is just what I need while it's hot!

(Also I'm grumpy about the health issues, but I won't bore you, it's just more of the same. Chronic illness sucks.)

Now that I've regained some energy, I'm hoping to get back into the swing of writing, catching up on Guardian fanfic, and my long-due Guardian rewatch!
