Dancing

Dance class has been really fun! We're probably performing as part of a dance show in 2-ish months, and I signed up to be part of the group (it's voluntary). We've recently done the pre-chorus and first chorus of Zerobaseone's "In Bloom" (starting with the ground part where the lyrics go "cha~ange"), and we're now practicing Twice's "One Spark" the last chorus + bridge + dance break. The performance will likely consist of a mix-up of these two choreos, possibly a third, and I'm excited! Those are two very fun dances and I've been so eager I started practicing at home again ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’–

ExchangesI signed up to [community profile] rarefemslashexchange! I kept mulling it over, but now that I finished my Yuletide assignment, I think I can do it? It kinda depends on what requests are out there - there's two with minimal details in there rn I could imagine filling, and it is just 500 words minimum, so I might be able to push myself for fandoms I write/read less often in ๐Ÿค”

It's looking like Chocolate Box might not run again this year, and the [personal profile] candyheartsex mod seems to be back to sub in one more year. Not sure yet if I'll sign up! It's a big exchange, meaning I'm more likely to find someone to write one of my more niche fandoms/ships, and it is also just 300 words minimum, but that'd be two assignments to get done at the same time while also dealing with work and having to finish my FFFX assignment... Idk yet. It was definitely fun last year! But I also wanna do less exchanges this year and focus on my WIPs again. BUT! Exchanges are fun! Much dilemma, such angst.

Speaking off, I really do need to sit down and work on my [community profile] fffx assignment ๐Ÿ˜… I have a decent idea, but the deadline is January 20th! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I have to work without much time off from the 27th of December onward until then, and am starting to sweat about it a little. (Might even secretly be hoping for a one week delay ahahah ^^"). I'm going to try and finish the key scenes during my tiny Christmas break, tho considering how much of it I'll spend with family, I doubt I'll get all that much done OTL

WritingWorking on my RFSEx letter got me back into Disney's Descendants headspace xD but instead of picking up the nearly finished Juma future fic I've got languishing in my WIPs, I went and started a new one inspired by one of the prompts I put up :')

His gaze landed two blond teens around his age and a familiar brunette. Gil relaxed. It was just Jane, talking to two of herโ€ฆ classmates? Friends?

She was smiling as always, and Gil stuffed a croissant in his mouth before picking up the tray and making his way over to Jane. One of her friendsโ€”the guy, looming over Jane but smaller than Gil by maybe half a head and definitely less built, Gil could take him in a fight if he had toโ€”leaned in, his lips twisting up into a smirk. Jane's smile slipped, wobbled, and recovered. Gil paused mid-step, his brow furrowing.

Something was off.

Without a second thought, Gil lengthened his stride, long legs eating up the distance between them. He swerved to set his tray down on a table and approach the teens from behind, in case he needed to take them by surprise. Jane wasn't looking his way, her gaze dropped to the floor, her shoulders hunched, and Gil didn't like it one bit.


I just love love love friends (or maybe-friends, not-yet-friends) being protective of each other *squishes characters* And writing up why I love the Jane/Uma ship gave me so many Jane & Uma & Gil & Harry friendship feels - I want them to adopt the mousy lil wallflower! Like I said to my friend Kays, she'd work as a great addition to the group, in an almost similar function as Gil does (he's such a golden retriever puppy, ready to play attack dog when necessary, but generally good-natured and so, so loyal) and Jane would add a moral center to the group :D

Honestly, I was so tempted to go off about how I imagine all their dynamics playing out in the letter, but it's not really too relevant since if anyone matches me, it'll be on Jane/Uma, and not their whole collection of friends? x'D Ahhhh, but! I have SO MANY feels about these characters!

Like, look at Harry's little smirk up there! He's such a smug lil bastard boy, and he loves playing up the unhinged angle to keep his enemies and allies alike on the back foot. He's someone who pushes and pushes and doesn't take no for an answer. He takes, and takes, and that's such a terrible combination with Jane! Because Jane is a people-pleaser and a giver and so easily taken advantage of? There's no way Harry would respect her at first, not with that first impression. She's a push-over, and if Harry's interested in anything about her, it's to see just how far she'll let him push (which, imo, would be pretty far and until she reaches her breaking point, probably). The thing is, Harry doesn't care about a lot of people - his family to some degree, but which of these kids doesn't have parent issues?, Uma, Gil, and what Uma wants. In that sense, Harry is the hardest for Jane to win over: if Jane is what Uma wants, Harry will fold her into their little group, but that doesn't mean he has to like her. I do think though that with time these two could grow to understand each other, if they get to a point where Harry stops distrusting Jane (the last of these three VKs to do so, imo) and starts opening up. Probably after Jane opened up about a lot of things. In the meantime, however, he's going to be snide and mock her and prod at her boundaries to see if he can make her lash out (and be delighted if he actually manages to push her over that line!)

Gil is the easiest to win over, since he's a very easy-going sunshine boy. He's like a puppy who is happy to play with anyone who wants to play, and I think he would take to Jane immediately. He's not dumb or oblivious exactly (you can't be, growing up on the Isle) but he's happy to live in the moment? He doesn't have to worry about Jane attacking him since she's physically weaker and her magical status is unknown, but she doesn't use it regardless, so he knows he can fight her off if he has to. That allows him to relax, and he's probably the first to trust in her kindness and general sincerity. Besides, he has Uma and Harry to worry about others faking niceness, so he can have fun befriending Jane in the meantime. And I think Jane would find him good company to be around, once she realizes he's not like the other jocks she knows? He's no Chad Charming, and despite his impressive and intimidating physique, he's the least dangerous of this VKs trio. He's the least likely to hurt her emotionally, too.

And Uma... well. She needs to assert herself as the leader, and Jane wouldn't challenge that, which is a plus point in Uma's book. But Uma would probably be a bit manipulative and push at Jane's boundary to see what makes her tick (very similar to Harry in that way, but with a slightly different vibe?) Like all the VKs, she carries her own trauma from the Isle and its way of survival, and for Uma this is expressed in a need to be on top of everyone else and in control, to ensure her own freedom. She doesn't like being dependant on others, and I don't think she would trust Jane's kindness to be genuine (too used to seeing it as a trap or a trade). There's a lot of parallels between Uma and Mal, they're narrative mirrors, and I think some of Uma's early interactions with Jane would go similar to how Mal's went in DD1. But I also think Jane could challenge Uma in a way that is non-threatening and still forces Uma to face the consequences of her own behaviour. Possibly Uma would be so focussed on figuring out what Jane's hidden motive is that she doesn't realize they've gotten close and things have gotten real between them (and then Uma panics and backpedals and hurts Jane in the process, which is even worse because now Uma feels guilty and that's something she *shouldn't* feel, she's a villain ffs, she doesn't do guilt. But now she went and tricked herself into caring for this baffling girl, and well. Once Uma gets over herself, there's no one that can stop her from taking what she wants.

...aaaaaand I'm rambling again, RIP :') I just love these characters so much? I have a lot of thoughts about Mal, Evie, Jay, Carlos and Ben, too, but I'm gonna save that for another time.


K-Pop Dance Class

I haven't talked about it much, but I've been learning kpop choreos since... mid-late 2020s? I needed some type of music-focussed workout to replace my ballroom dance classes during the pandemic, and ended up finding MV's with dance choreography to copy. I honestly wasn't much into kpop at that point, but an acquaintance kept recommending the band LOONA to me so I checked them out and fell for the interwoven and complex narrative their songs told. And then I eventually discovered Dreamcatcher, and started doing their choreos too, and well, now I'm here. In this household we stan Dreamcatcher #Insomnia

But with my new job, I don't find the time and motivation to do my practice regularly enough. So instead I found a class in a nearby dance studio! It was a stroke of luck that they offer kpop classes. We usually practice a new chorus across 1-2 courses before moving on to the next, which is incredibly fast-paced and I don't usually have the technicalities or precision down by the end (nor do all of them stick well in my head), but on the upside we don't linger on songs I dislike for long either and it's a great way to turn off my mind after work and just follow the flow (and mirror what the teacher is doing in the front).

List of Choreos...that we've done since I joined. I'm probably missing one or two, and I've missed class for health reasons for two choreos (again, fast pace) at least, but these are the ones I remember, in no particular order:

Dancing

I've tried out a kpop dance course in July and officially joined after summer hols this month! We've been practicing Aya from Mamamoo, last week we learned the chorus part of Jihyo's Killing Me Good (though my timing is... so off. I need a better spot to keep an eye on the trainer), and now we started on the chorus of Fast Forward by Jeon Somi, which we'll continue next week. It's pretty fun, overall, and a great breather from the stress at work.

Writing

I've switched between writing a couple different fandoms for various exchanges recently (a rarepairex treat, three fandomgiftbasket fills, two of which are done, my fffx assignment). It's been fun delving back into nostalgic anime fandoms like Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. Ygo! was my first fandom-fandom, actually. My first ever fanfic was a Mary Sue self-insert who got saved by Seto Kaiba lol. I think her name was Laila? Leia? And there's gonna be two Deja Vu fics. I had to rewrite my original fill because it accidentally got too close to a DNW, but I love both and they're different enough that I feel good publishing both.

I put in my swap wishes for fiab, too, so hopefully this multifandom trend will continue!

Grimm is super fun to write and I'm close to finishing a couple fics to post. There's a lot of second hand knowledge from my job going into the pregnancy fic. The last smutty bits in the canon divergence OT3 rewrite are fighting me, but once I can stitch it all together, I'm hitting post. So excited to share!

However, Guardian wishlists are hella distracting. I've already seen three prompts I /need/ to write, and there's still people signing up! What do!?

Watching

I've been watching Dimension 20's Mentopolis, and omg it's so good! I hate having to wait a whole week for a new episode, but so far, definitely worth it! The main characters are the personalisations of Hyperfixation (played by Hank Green), Impulse, Attention, Pleasure, Curiosity and Conscience, and they're all super fun! It's set in a detective noir mystery setting inside the brain, which is super fun :D!

Grimm Rewatch is going well. I'm excited to start season 3 tonight, I have very little memories of what happened in it. Juliette continues to be my blorbo, and the fic ideas keep multiplying.

Really need to pick Cang Lan Jue (Love Between Fairy And Devil) back up, I made it to episode 11/12 last October before my new workplace ate up my time. The body switch trope is giving me a lot of second hand embarrassment, so it's been hard to start again, no matter how much I originally loved it!

End of June Ramble

Life

Had a work event I reluctantly went to - had a great time hanging out with a couple people and firmly ignoring others (am still bemused by how petty some of these people get but I'm hopefully not stuck here for much longer). Got stuck on the applications which is giving me a case of the nerves since the deadline is July 15 and I really need to sit down and finish all that stuff.

Dancing

Started out pretty well in the beginning of June, then flagged towards the end because heat OTL. Added a tutorial for HIP by Mamamoo and Star by Loona to my practice list, but then found I was too impatient to focus on those most days. Ended up adding Dreamcatcher's Lucky Strike cover, too, which makes me want to dance every time I hear it. The choreo is easy enough and a good power-through song to keep going when I'm getting sweaty.

Current line-up includes the following at 75% speed: Ponzona by Purple Kiss, Lunatic by Moonbyul, Lucky Strike by Dreamcatcher, PTT by Loona, Vivid by Heejin + No Dot by Sua and I'm A B by Hwasa at 100% speed, sometimes with another Lucky Strike at 100% to cap it off.

Watching

  • I got stuck on Detective L during episode 4, the introduction of the forensic scientist had too heavy cannibalism vibes (which is a very strong squick for me, verging on trigger on bad days) and I still haven't gotten through the scene. Gonna give it another shot when I feel less like I'm stuck in a pressure cooker
  • Ended up watching primarily ChilledChaos stream VoDs over on Twitch/his youtube, my favourite are the Town of Salem games hands down and he had some great ones this month. Very funny and good to relax to.
  • Binge-watched the entirety of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity over the last two days and DAMN am I in love. What a poignant show with an incredible cast and DM. I'm already a Critter, though I'm way behind (haven't watched the first ExU yet nor C3), but Calamity is free of needing prior knowledge, which is great! :D
  • Watched a bunch of the comedy shows over on CollegeHumour due to Brennan Lee Mulligan being /everywhere/ since his stint with ExU. He's so funny, his monologuing is hilarious and fantastic and *skilled*! Primarily watched Breaking News Network and Game Changer (at least the parts available to public for free)

Writing

I did reasonably well sticking with the WED challenge before dropping out around day 25 due to lack of inspiration/irl shenanigans. Hoping to recapture the muse for July tho :')
I ended up posting 4 of those fics I worked on:
  1. Episode 3: Operation Campus Cat, A Covert Investigation By Chief Infiltrator Da Qing (Da Qing & Shen Wei's students)
  2. Episode 16: Can't Get Fat With One Mouthful (Da Qing with kittens!)
  3. The Fringe Benefits Of Being Family (ZYL & kid OCs, family fluff)
  4. Long Night In Longcheng (Weilan smut with dragon!Shen Wei)

Reading

It felt like I didn't get much reading done this month, but going through my bookmarks proves that false lol. Tbf I took a dive into first Assassin's Creed and then Witcher fic around the same time I stopped writing my own Guardian fic, so I think I really needed a break. And I finally got started on going through the SID_comm's meta tag! not that I made it far lol but it was a super fun day and I wanna spent more time in there <3

Goals for July

I started a mini-event with some fellow Guardian fans in discord, Longfic July, wherein we all encourage each other to work on a long WIP for the entire month.

In my case, this is my Arranged Marriage AU, a Canon AU in which Haixing and Dixing have a different sort of treaty and are much more equal neighbouring powers than in canon. When Heipaoshi announces he's looking to marry a Haixingren, the Bureau quickly picks Zhao Yunlan to be his pride. But while Zhao Yunlan will do his duty, his heart is already taken: by one mysterious Shen Wei, whom he seems unable to track down ever since the announcement...
  • do research on Chinese marriage customs, both contemporary and ancient
  • edit the existing 15k
  • rewrite the rooftop flashback/Weilan's first meeting
  • write ~15k more words

Other goals:
  • get dancing regularity back up to 5/7 days a week
  • catch up on Guardian fic, especially Da Qing adventures and Elenothar's dragon fic
  • read up and get involved in more Guardian meta posts

End of May rambling

Family & Personal
My grandparents came over for Mother's Day (May 8th) and Father's Day (May 26th). I love them to bits, even if they can be exhausting with their quirks. They really loved the veggie mix I baked for dinner (we had BBQ for both days), I'm still proud to have pleased both of them since we're all picky eaters here :3

Kinda sad that cousin and cousin-in-law don't join us on these two days, which tbf they don't since Aunt isn't here either so they visit his parents instead. STILL. :( guess I'll have to wait until my brother's birthday in June until we get together again <3

Dancing_
Added No Dot by Sua to my practice line-up because I'm obsessed, and I couldn't find a decent mirror of Beauty Full by Dami yet (nor for Honey by Solar, which is this week's obsession, and it BUGS heh me). Hoping Dreamcatcher will release more dance practices for all the solos! They just posted the MV for Jiu's Cherry (Real Miracle) so I'm hopefull *fingers crossed*

Current practice consists, off and on, as follows:
  1. No Dot by Sua

  2. Lunatic by Moonbyul

  3. Maison by Dreamcatcher

  4. PTT by Loona

I've mostly been doing No Dot and Lunatic on 75% on loop 3-4 times before moving on, Maison is on 100% and I'm pretty much done with. Trying to add PTT back in (I can do the first half + chorus at 75% decently) but I realized this is the dance that contributed to me dislocating my ilio-sacral joint back in February, so I'm cautious. Gonna put it at the beginning of the exercise so I'm not too tired and fumbly and make the risky move with the precision it needs to avoid injury ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ˜…

I'm also considering adding Hwasa's I'm a B back in as my "break" full-speed song to keep me going when I'm flagging, Maison isn't always doing it for me anymore. But tbf I've been on the high end of histamine this month, which is always counterproductive for my exercise regime. Might add Odd Eye, You & I, and Why Not back in, possibly gonna start on the whole Ponzona choreo soon (I've only learned the chorus part so far). I'm very wishy washy on committing to a concrete list lmao, I tend to throw choreos in and out depending on mood -- the goal is to exercise ideally for an hour (including my muscles reps like sit-ups, etc.), that tends to work best if I'm in the right mood for the songs I have playing.

Watching_
I watched and very much enjoyed the 15-episodes long cdrama "Reset" ๅผ€็ซฏ (Kai Duan) this month. It's a time-loop "we reset when we die" crime thriller/mystery with really adorable main characters and several good side characters. I might make a post about what I liked (and disliked) about it later, but for now, definitely worth the time! I binged it on a work night like the fool I am ^^" Too much suspense to put down, especially after the episode 8 complication/reveal/twist! If you don't want to get caught in the same trap, I suggest taking a break after episode 7 before things literally explode :'D

Fanfic & Fandom
The 520 Days Reverse Exchange was a lot of fun! I'm always torn on whether I want to participate in this sort of events because my To Write list is so long but the feeling of gifting someone their wish is great? Plus a lot of great works came out of it, and I've been enjoying perusing them! :D Anyway I'm 100% looking forward to doing the wishlist again, fingers crossed I'll manage several shorter fics this time x'D

Writing_
Since Camp NaNo worked out really well for me with a 25k monthly goal, I figured I'd do something similarly for May, but with lower stakes - 25k was doable, but since I'm the type who wants to hit par daily, I was definitely struggling keeping up, especially on busy days. I went for 15k instead which gave me a doable daily goal of not quite 500 words, which I had fun reducing to lower and lower daily goals until I ended up with 23 words a day when I finally breached 15k on May 19th. Decided to up it to 20k, which I hit yesterday :D This way almost felt more productive than April, and I wonder if it's because I'm more inspired this month or the lower word count goal actually helped keep my mood up? *thinks* definitely worth keeping an eye on.

I mainly ended up working on my 520 Days giftfic Keep On Going's last 2-3 scenes and the bingo's May bonus prompt "time travel" in the Zhu Hong-centric fic Unacceptable, plus finishing the last chapter of this is how the war is won. Words also went into an eldritch horror!Shen Wei Weilan smut fic (nicknamed Void Creature for lack of a title), a new addition to my kidfic series WIP titled "The Fringe Benefits of Family" in which ZYL braids everyone's hair, my Da Qing's Adventures entry, and into nearly finishing my first fic in a new series, the Already Married AU (in which, aptly, Weilan are already married pre-canon). This one is also Zhu Hong PoV and was really flowing whenever I wanted to work on Unacceptable. The brain just, uh, no? work on this one instead?? ignore deadline??? OTL

My plan for June is to wrap up the first Already Married fic (and figure out a title RIP) and post one (or maybe more?๐Ÿ‘€) Da Qing codas for the event. I'm assuming June's bonus prompt will be Pride-related, so I've started working on the sequel to my vampire AU, which is gonna deal with this AU's version of the Wang Yike case. I've been stuck on that one for long enough, and I don't have a good square for it on my card, so maybe this way I can motivate myself to finish *strikes pose*

Long-term I also really want to get back into the rhythm of writing the Arranged Marriage AU because it's been long enough, I'm really excited for it! But the stumbling block of re-reading the 15k I've already written + the editing I'm aware it needs... *flops* wish me luck

K-Pop Dance Choreography Covers - The List

For anyone who didn't know yet: I'm a dance nerd. I've done ballroom and latin for years, really enjoyed the zumba trend (and was very sad to see its popularity die down again), and for some reason I only got the idea to check for dance choreos online when I slowly slipped into K-Pop fandom in late 2020? (Well, I say fandom, I mostly just. Listen to a couple bands lmao)

I've been learning choreos on and off, as health allows, since February 2021 and it's fun.
