And yet… And yet. Those ghosts who had not been xiao-Shu had had a familiar angle to their jawline. A familiar curve to their nose. A familiar joy in their smile.

This man has none of these. He simply is.

Sadly, I didn't have much time to read through the collection - I still have several fics open in tabs I didn't get to - but I can certainly recommend this handful of fics:

• Blackmail Is An Ugly Word, a Naruto, Team 7 time travel fic that is hilarious. It definitely doesn't take itself to serious in the best ways!


• The Friend Trap, an Untamed fic which was incidently written for ThebanSecretBand, by nirejseki. It's an Unpowered, Historical AU in which Nie Huaisang tricks Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue into working together to mend the rift between them after Events (TM). Incredible worldbuilding and good characterisation!


• Both The Witcher fics were pretty decent, both dealing with the aftermath of the Mountain Break-Up.
  but if I'm moving a mountain has Yennefer and Jaskier hooking up to make Geralt jealous, only to somehow end up in an OT3 with him


• and One Blessing by nununununu has some-being overhear Geralt and dropping Jaskier into a new little adventure (and Geralt jumping in immediately to rescue him)

The 520 Day collection revealed this weekend! :D I haven't had much time to check it out yet (the downside of working weekend shifts) but there's a lot of good-looking works in there worth checking out!

First and foremost, of course, my incredible gift by the miracle-working velithya, who wrote me 22k of soulmates with wings fic :O! I am awed and humbled and very much in love with every word of that gift, especially the almost Slow Burn of Weilan getting together, with all of their hang-ups and what's stopping them from getting there and how they solve it... *heart eyes* You should go and help me heap praises on her <3

I've made some progress with my bethefirst fic! Finally crossed the 1k line. Considering focussing the scope of the fic on one particular character instead of introducing all 7 members with equal focus, since I don't have a plot outlined exactly and am working more based on vibes :')

I also signed up for the 520 Day Reverse Exchange! I had a lot of fun with it last year and am super looking forward to it :D Although I have less free time this year thanks to my new work, but I do have some vacation days in April. Fingers crossed I'll get my assignment done within those!

Chapter 4 "As A Cat Should" of In This, As In All Things is up!

"Xiao-Zhao!" Da Qing yowled, claws swiping at the human’s head. Zhao Yunlan ducked at the last second, expending just enough energy to avoid being hit. Da Qing had to flip mid-air and dig his claws into Zhao Yunlan’s jacket, landing on his shoulder instead of sailing straight into the wall. If Da Qing weren't so mad, he'd be proud of his kitten. "How dare you show your face here! Ungrateful brat, have I taught you nothing?"

"Ah, forgive me, Fat Cat, I've forgotten what your favourite food is, so I brought you a variety of different foods. I hope you’ll understand."

Now that he said it, the smells coming from the tote bag were amazing. Da Qing twitched his nose in indecision, torn between being angry at Zhao Yunlan and the instinct to never turn down food from the right people.

Anger won out. Barely.

“That’s not the only thing you have forgotten.” His tail jerked from side to side in agitation. “How come your dad is the one to tell me that you’re returning? And what’s up with looking for a place on your own anyway? What do you need all that space for, huh?”

Watching

I spent a lot of time while sick watching a lot of random stuff xD so many reality tv dating shows...

Under The Skin
Binged all 20 episodes in a matter of days. I loved it! It's a detective show about a sketch artist and how he helps the police solve interesting cases.

I enjoyed how consistent the characterisations were, even as the characters grew. The character conflict was very logical and emotional and highlighted the characters by pitting them against each other. The main case resolving around the personal stakes of the two main leads was A+. It was always present in the background, too, slowly building up to the finale at the end of episode 20, which allowed the two leads and their relationship to grow. 11/10 would recommend.

Also: Shen Yi is my precious baby boy that needs to be whumped 90% of the time. (And if we go shippy, Du Cheng absolutely bottoms. With a praise kink.)

Batwoman
Entertaining, very comic tropey in parts. I've grown to enjoy the characters, although some bit are very predictable, like Alice not dying of the multiverse paradox. They needed to keep her as the main villain, duh - but it was an enjoyable "Oh shit, oh no" moment when Kate realized what she'd done :3 I didn't make it much further than that episode (in favour of watching Under The Skin instead).

I have some criticsm.

a) The whole "Alice is Kate's twin" reveal was rushed, imo. They could've easily dragged that out over the first couple episodes, throw in more effective doubt about is she, isn't she? Instead, they straight up confirmed it immediately, then tried backpedalling every other episode by trying to throw in some "OR IS SHE!?" The whole thing felt a bit clumsily handled.

b) I hated that the second episode started out with Kate's inner monologue about how she can't tell her dad without proof... and the next scene she immediately tells him without proof. Like, pick one or the other! Have her monologue afterwards! It was a very flaily start and if I hadn't had a fever I might've no stuck it out ^^"

c) Fuck the crossover episode. Skipped that shit. I'm here for Batwoman content, not multiverse content! Like, love that it exists for fans who watched the other series, but don't just drop that into the middle of a season. Make a crossover section! I don't even know how many parts it has, air-dropping "part 2" into Batwoman season 1 is just massive fail.

d) The demonizing of Mary's mom was... clunky. And I still don't get it. Like, I understand the dad needing space and them having relationship troubles when the secret came out, but everyone treated her explanation of "I saw you suffer, it wasn't healthy for you nor this little kid, so I gave you closure" as if it was the most far-fetched alien reasoning ever instead of... empathy?? It doesn't help that canonically, we never learned how long ago Beth went missing. But judging that police support and public support started flagging despite how rich the Kanes were and the resources they put into the whole search... it feels like 9+ months at least to me, tbr.

So she bribed an official to fake a result to make them believe Beth died. For all she knew, she had! It was a pretty likely scenario, even if they never found the body. It's really just comic books luck that the dead twin chose up as the villain years later.

And the moment said dead twin kills the mom her motivation is suddenly understandable!? Like, the whiplash I got from that. It might've gone smoother if Mary's reaction had been more emotionally wrought/given more space to deal with the situation before her mom's death, but everything just felt really flip-floppy, depending on what they needed for the plot. And was obviously just to pull a "ah ha! you hated her, now feel guilty because she died!" card on Kate/the viewer.

I wonder if there's any Mary/Beth femslash out there, though. Mary/Luke also feels like a nice ship. I know the canon ship I'm supposed to be rooting for is Kate/Sophie, but I'm honestly not a fan of her messy married situation. They can stay messy exes, thanks.

Sorry, I haven't been active much! Work is exhausting and the cold I caught finally got to me, I had to call in sick (I really should have called in sick for today, too, but I already promised to take the late shift and don't wanna back out last minute... ngggh...)

The stuffy brain means I haven't really had the attention span to do much writing or watching - I'm behind on the Guardian rewatch, both commenting and taking my own notes. Hoping to catch up on this soon.

I'm on a writing spree! It's like now that my brain stopped being stuffed, the creativity just flooded back in. If I had time, I'd probably spend 24 hours on working on various fics straight...

I'm 4 bingo squares away from blackout, and I'm honestly champing at the bit to finish it (even though we can take it into the new year). Officially, January is the end date (plus a catch up month for all the bonus prompts one may have missed). So I'll definitely have the opportunity! I have two bonus fills I can switch in still, so really I'm only missing 2. One of them is gonna be a Weilan Time Travel Fix-It (current title In This, As In All Things) I've been chipping away at... might post the first chapters despite not being finished if time runs out, though XD

Yuletide & Fandom Events 2k23

I fortunately finished my yuletide fic shortly before the deadline - I really worried I wouldn't make it, but missed the defaulting deadline due to fever, so I figured, fuck it. And hey, I think it turned out well! My beta liked it anyway :D I'm excited for my recipee to read it.

Generally, I've been having fun dipping my toes in more fandom events this year. I think for next year, I want to participate in more, as I have the time? Write less on my personal stuff (though that, too, whenever the mood strikes) and just. Interact more. I've been meaning to work on several projects that aren't Guardian, anyway (a GYADL fic, finishing my Untamed fic, the like) and I'm feeling motivated to tackle tiny fandoms I don't know anyone in, thanks to all the yuletide excitement. Hopefully I won't feel the lack of comments/validation too much, being busy with work x'D that's been one of my primary motivators in previous years of sticking with just the one fandom, aside from meeting fandom friends with the same obsession. (And really, Weilan is still very much #1 in my brain. The Kinnporsche series tried sneaking in there with its unhealthy dark VegasPete, but I forgot about them in less than a month lol).

I... don't actually know all that many fandom events, tho, especially not ones crossing multiple fandoms ^^" I would love some recs and descriptions of how they work? I've heard of fandomtrees and battleshipex this year, but I'm not quite sure what the latter is and I really would love some for the first half of the year. I will definitely do the Reverse Sundial again if it's running!

Ahhhh, I'm finally off work OTL I'm so excited to delve further into the sid_guardian's Fourth Annual Interdimensional Haixing-Dixing 520 Day Reverse Exchange collection and enjoy all these lovely new works. I've only had time to check out my own gift, the fanart and two shorter fics so far, I'm excited! The summaries and tags are 👀👌

First of all, big shout-out to china_shop who wrote me an utterly incredible story that hits all of my favourite things about this scenario on the nail and provided me with even more fodder for thought. Ngl while I loved all the ads I chose to request for, this one was definitely the one I was secretly hoping would get picked because I'm a sucker for political worldbuilding and group dynamics, and the political tension + mentor vibes china_shop managed to pack into this are superb. Nevermind the incredible Weilan dynamic, both as a team and as finally, finally getting their shit together and kissing. Go check it out if you haven't yet, it's absolutely worth it!

I'm also very happy with how my gift for the amazing elenothar turned out. Ngl, I was surprised and pleased to get her as a giftee, I feel I have a pretty good grasp of what she likes and I'm always happy to write more Shen Wei's students, even if I'm often stumped on what plot to work with in that regard. So this was a great excuse to explore the direct aftermath of a potential fix-it and how it affects Shen Wei's civilian identity as a professor :D (shout-out to ishipallthings for the beta <3)

I could probably write a whole post of the ups and downs of writing this fic, and I might even do it later. I have... like four outtakes I will post into my outtakes collection at some point, too lmao because this fic kept changing on me. I'm not used to pantsing this much! But it turned out alright, and the response so far has been reassuring, too <3 (plus the important thing was of course that Elenothar likes it, so it's a success!)
