So, my July's not started off well RIP :')
I'm gonna talk about the premise a bit more under the cut if you're interested <3 considering doing this for my NaNo project this year (if I do NaNo, kinda depends on how applications are gonna turn out).
Originally, I conceived this story as Bas' mother's story, before I realized it would be more fun for me as a mystery *uncovering* what happened to her to land her pregnant outside of marriage rather than writing the drama of it happening. I shifted the PoV over to Bas' godmother at that point, figuring her trying to find out what's happening as it's happening could be interesting, but then it would still be a story about Bas and his mother, and not her story, and that wasn't working out so I shelved it. Besides, around that time I discovered Guardian and got distracted by fandom :D
So now it's Bas' turn to figure out his own history :3
His friends are the third son of a Duke by the name of Alexios, they kinda grew up together thanks to his godmother being the Queen's lady-in-waiting, they've known each other from childhood. The other one is a commoner, a girl by the name of Cornflower (I've decided that names and classism is a Whole Thing with this world, it's fun worldbuilding :D) who he met at "school" (still building that system so it's not gonna be a modern school analogue). Her presence is significant because this world is a Magocracy - everyone with magic is noble because they reached that status due to having magic and making a whole Divine Right thing out of it. Since this is all about parentage, I figured having a Very Noble companion and a Commoner companion is ideal for foils to Bas and his situation half-way between as a bastard (it's presumed his father is a commoner. But is he? 👀 Guess we'll have to find out.)
The two major role models in Bas' life are his mother, who is a noble lady but works as something of a herbologist/potioneer, not exactly on the outskirts of noble society but in a weird position in it due to Bas' birth and circumstances. She's unmarried and most of her family is dead. The other one is Bas' godmother, Countess Beatrice, who is gonna be *so snarky* I love her already. She'd probably get on with Cornflower like a house on fire if it weren't for the distance the gap of social status provides them. Hm. Actually gonna have to think about that some more, there's gonna be an interesting dynamic in there...
Hoping to finally sit down today after dinner to tackle the longfic, now that I'm feeling a little more refreshed and on the mend! And if not the longfic, then at least more of this novel xD
Life
I've been plagued with health issues all last week (it was kinda inevitable, my histamine levels were already high and then I got my period, so they went through the roof. Stress heightens them too, and applications have been a rollercoaster of emotions, nevermind the not-ideal work climate, so I've been. Exhausted. Emotionally empty. Recharging, in the moments I have.)Writing
Which all lead to me not touching my longfic WIP I planned on working on for July. Trying to cut myself some slack here, considering how stressful my week has been. I did end up listening to podcasts/video essays on writing, which has been good for rumination. This video from Around The Campfire has been especially helpful for me, clarifying what exactly Want and Need are, and how I get them from my premise. Something about how Levi presented the concept just really clicked for me, and my brain's run off with an original concept I had floating around for a while now, just, building it into a whole damn novel plot.I'm gonna talk about the premise a bit more under the cut if you're interested <3 considering doing this for my NaNo project this year (if I do NaNo, kinda depends on how applications are gonna turn out).
Magic Royals
The premise for this is that the MC (tentatively named Bastian rn, I was originally going with Sebastian but nope I like Bas better than Seb, we'll see where I end up once this is done lol) is a noble bastard who wants to find out who his father is, so he and his friends (all of them around 14/15) go on a lil Detective adventure trying to solve the conspiracy around Bas' parentage and why it's a secret in the first place. It's a Magical Second World YA fantasy, right now the aesthetic is a bit Regency inspired because that's fun and makes sense for the whole. Noble Bastard plot.Originally, I conceived this story as Bas' mother's story, before I realized it would be more fun for me as a mystery *uncovering* what happened to her to land her pregnant outside of marriage rather than writing the drama of it happening.
