I think it shows whenever he takes a gamble or a risk, he does those surprisingly often - especially when it comes to trusting people (to a certain degree) because they are useful to him (Nick, Meisner - he gambles that they will behave according to their character)
Yes, this is all spot on! He takes that kind of gamble so often, and it doesn't always pay off, but then he's good at rolling with the punches and shifts his own plans accordingly. He desperately needs someone he can actually trust, but I don't think he ever really allows himself to actually feel that need (because if he did, he wouldn't be able to keep going as he has).
