Dreamcatcher's Vision

So Dreamcatcher just released their latest mini-album, Apocalypse: Follow Us, the sequel to their previous album Apocalypse: Save Us. The title track is Vision, and by God, I am OBSESSED *___* this song is like they tapped straight into my hindbrain and combined all the things I love about music and about Dreamcatcher's music in particular.

"Forward march!"

I love, love, love the music elements Dreamcatcher is leaning into with this song. It reminds me strongly of several of my favourite songs from Krypteria and Beyond the Black, with the techno-rock bits. And then you have the soft-voice bridges and third verse that are reminiscent of Within Temptation leading into the pre-chorus, giving the whole song that fantastic Dreamcatcher vibe.

They leaned a lot more into their metal-rock origins with Vision than the more pop-leaning (though still possessing metal elements, like the Latin chant at the end) Maison. Dami’s rap at the start of the second verse kills me every time (Turning over page, turning over page, turning over page, damn queen, go off! Jackie Chan, quickly, swiftly indeed.)

Yoohyeon’s thunder line and accompanying gesture reminds me *strongly* of Boca.

And can I just say, this is Handong’s era? Like, damn, girl’s been having some serious glow-up recently, and it was already evident in Maison and more importantly in her solo song Winter. She’s visibly grown more confident, which gives her a much stronger stage presence, plus I feel like either due to that confidence or perhaps more training, she has stronger vocals, too? Maybe it just feels like she got more lines in Vision than in other songs, but I feel like she’s a lot more centered/equal to the others this time/singing without heavy distortion filters, and honestly? Love that for her.

Also if the third title in this arc doesn’t end on -on, too, probably borrowing a French word again, I’ll eat my hat xD First Maison, now Vision? Yeah, I sense a trend.

The dance looks great, too! I’m hype to learn it (once I move into my flat, probably, because I don’t wanna annoy my interim landlady ^^“). The gun motive-gestures remained consistent between this dance and Maison’s, which I find very interesting! And I love the… pre-chorus? Part where they flap their hands in a big circle. Plus the end of the chorus gesture, that basically looks like they’re turning a giant knob? That tickles me so much lol. Very cyperpunk dystopia aesthetics!

The MV is gorgeous, too. The CGI is top-notch. I love all the lightning (and I noticed how Yoohyeon’s is blue, while Sua’s is green-orange-red, and everyone else seems to have pink-red colours? 👀 I wonder if there’s a connection). Between the dance and visuals and lyrics, the military call-to-arms works great, too (which feels like such a Metal staple, it’s great Dreamcatcher has one of their own now, too :D)

Speaking of visuals, I’m thirsty for Handong’s upper arm leather bands, like hot damn. Those are gorgeous accents.

Narratively, I’m fascinated how they moved from the “please someone fight for us” helpless/in need of saving motif in Maison to the more active call-to-arms of “march along the steps and reload” in Vision. The goddess/superhero motif in Maison, in which they fight directly against corporations in a futuristic setting that is still relatively whole, but already on the edge of ruin, turns into a stark contrast of dystopic cyberpunk of a different kind in Vision. Destroyed buildings, poison-green smoke, cracks in the earth – and military uniforms. Overall the vibe seems to lean more towards /vigilante/ saviours rather than the superhero vibe of Maison.

Dami occupies an interesting place in the narrative, getting another set of scenes in which she’s in a clearly technological environment with screens, observing the other Dreamcatcher members. While Jiu is the clear leader at the press conference, Dami seems more a behind-the-scenes leader. Personally I get mastermind vibes from her – she hits LAUNCH just before the shield is raised around the earth, but is she launching the shield or an attack that necessites the attack? Dami implied in her BTS on Maison that she’s getting saboteur vibes from her character, that she might be the secret villain. Double agent, triple agent? The tech backgrounds seem to align her more with the corporations/surveillance state. My first instinct in Maison was to cast her as the group’s hacker, but she could also be a spy, and honestly, I find both options very interesting.

I’m looking forward to the third act in this trilogy! Very excited to see how the story ends :D

(and I’m sorely tempted to do something ficcy with all these vibes I’m getting while I’m obsessing over the song. But a part of me also wants to wait until the third part is out, so I’ll know more? Ahhhh, decisions, decisions!)
